The joint venture between Bouygues Travaux Publics and Vinci Construction Grands Projets and their Egyptian partners Orascom Construction and Arabco Contractors has been awarded the Phase 3 contract for Line 3 of the Cairo Metro. The presidents of both France and Egypt, François Hollande and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, attended the official signing ceremony on 17 April 2016.
On 5 October 2022, Phase 3A of Line 3 was successfully delivered.
Main characteristics:
The contract covered the civil engineering work, including 17.7 km of new line and 15 stations (eight underground, five elevated and two at ground level). The work required the construction of a new tunnel under the Nile. Work started in the residential and administrative parts of the capital, including Zamalek Island, and ended in the densely populated and highly urbanised northern and southern districts.
On 29 August 2022, the last TBM used during Phase 3 completed the tunnel excavation. When it reached the Boulak shaft, it marked the end of tunnelling for the CML3 Phase 3 project. Two TBMs were needed to complete the three 9.45 m diameter tunnels over a distance of 7 km in a sandy, silt and clay environment. The slurry pressure TBMs successively went through the 8 underground stations, the diversion structure and then through 8 auxiliary shafts.
Client benefits:
The client, the National Authority for Tunnels, demonstrated renewed confidence in the joint venture, which has been building the metro system for North Africa’s largest urban area since 1981. The expansion of the Cairo Metro helps to efficiently and effectively regulate traffic and substantially reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
